Playa del Carmen is one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations — and unfortunately, that popularity has made it a target for online tourism fraud. Before you hand over a deposit, here are seven checks that separate a real dive operation from a risky one.
1. Look for a verifiable digital footprint
A legitimate shop has its own website, an active Google Business profile with reviews spanning multiple years, and a real physical address you can find on a map. If a "company" only exists as a single social media account with no history, treat that as a warning sign.
2. Confirm PADI registration
Every certified PADI dive shop has a public store PIN you can verify directly on padi.com. Deep México’s PIN is 5982 — check it yourself before booking anywhere. A shop that can’t offer this kind of verifiable credential isn’t operating at a professional standard.
3. Read reviews on independent platforms
Testimonials on a company’s own website can be curated. Google Reviews and TripAdvisor show what real guests actually experienced. Look for a steady spread of reviews across years, not a suspicious cluster of five-star ratings posted in the same week.
4. Be wary of prices that are too good to be true
Certified instructors, proper equipment, fuel, insurance, and site fees all cost money. A price far below the market rate usually means something gets cut — often revealed as a surprise fee on the day of the dive.
5. Talk to them before you pay
A professional operator answers questions clearly, explains exactly what’s included, and states their cancellation policy without hesitation. The quality of that first conversation is a preview of the service you’ll get in the water.
6. Get your booking in writing
Confirmation should include the date, time, activity, price inclusions, and cancellation terms. If a company only takes cash with no paper trail, that’s a red flag.
7. Choose real, long-standing experience
Deep México has operated in the Riviera Maya for over 30 years, and in 2024 PADI Worldwide recognized founder Gustavo Dietz Moch with its Membership Achievement Award — the kind of track record that can’t be manufactured overnight.
