Most beginner-friendly sites sit between 10 and 12 meters deep, close to shore. There’s no exhausting boat ride to reach a reef, and open cenotes give you a taste of cavern-style diving without the overhead environment that intimidates first-timers.

Currents here are typically light — drift dives that carry you gently along the reef while the boat picks you up at the end. You focus on buoyancy and spotting marine life, not swimming against the current to get back.

Cozumel is stunning, but its stronger currents and deeper drop-offs add complexity that’s better suited to divers with more logbook entries. As a beginner, you’re already managing trim, air consumption, and navigation — the site doesn’t need to be the most extreme one available. Many divers deliberately save Cozumel for after they’ve built experience in Playa del Carmen’s calmer waters.
